How the calculation works
Pallets are not placed in a container in a single orientation. When one section is laid lengthwise and the other crosswise, capacity increases noticeably. The tool splits the width and length into two zones and fills each zone in a different orientation, searching for the best arrangement.
The simple “divide by length, divide by width” method gives 8 Euro pallets for a 20’ container; the real figure is 11. The difference comes precisely from this mixed arrangement.
Why the result is approximate
- Container internal dimensions vary by a few centimetres depending on manufacturer and age.
- The door opening is narrower than the internal width; the last row may catch on it.
- Space may need to be left for securing the load.
- Cargo overhanging the pallet directly breaks the calculation.
A definitive plan is made with a load drawing. This tool is for reaching a quick preliminary decision.
The real question: volume or weight
Even if the number of pallets fits, the total weight may exceed the container capacity. With dense cargo (ceramics, steel, marble) weight almost always sets the limit; in that case how many pallets fit has no practical meaning.
The Limiting factor column in the table shows which constraint is reached first. If it says “Weight”, the container is sailing with unused volume.
